Adobe Clarifies Terms of Service Update Amid Generative AI Concerns

Adobe, the software giant behind popular creative tools like Photoshop, has found itself in the midst of controversy following a recent update to its Terms of Service (TOS). The changes, which users must agree to in order to continue using Adobe's applications and services, have sparked widespread concern among creatives who fear their work may be used to train Adobe's Generative AI models without their consent.

The updated terms state that Adobe may access user content through both automated and manual methods, using techniques such as machine learning to analyze the content in order to improve its services and software. This ambiguous language has led many to interpret it as Adobe potentially using their creative work to train its Firefly generative AI system or access sensitive projects protected by non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).

In response to the growing backlash, Adobe published a blog post on June 6th to address these concerns head-on. The company reassured its users that their commitments have not changed, emphasizing that it does not train Firefly on customer content. Instead, Firefly's AI models are trained using licensed content from sources like Adobe Stock and public domain material where copyright has expired.

Adobe's Chief Product Officer, Scott Belsky, acknowledged the unclear nature of the notification and stated that the company's legal team is working to address the ambiguous language.
