Potterharry97 at the beginning of this month took it to Reddit, explaining the issue he faced while submitting the game. As per his post, Valve did not allow games that had AI-generated content on Steam to be published.
He further explained that he had AI-generated assets in the game that were later improved, prior to the actual launch of the game.
As per he was notified it may have been certain copyright issues that had a primary role in the rejection of the game. Also, it seemed that the company had found that some assets may have the involvement of one or more third parties.
The notice read, “As the legal ownership of such AI-generated art is unclear, we cannot ship your game while it contains these AI-generated assets, unless you can affirmatively confirm that you own the rights to all of the IP used in the data set that trained the AI to create the assets in your game.”
The user potterharry97 had resubmitted the game, by removing any AI-generated content manually, which was the requested by Valve itself, but still, the game had been rejected. This might point towards a new development that might be on its way, which would reject AI-generated materials.
This same issue had been faced by a number of other developers, who are now calling the AI technology a waste as it may not actually be of use when looking at the commercial aspects.
Is Valve actually banning AI content?
There have been no official announcements of such development nor there have been any updates in the guidelines. At present, there are 13 types of content that the developers are prohibited from, which includes hate speech, sexually explicit images of real people, blockchain games, and also content that violates the law or the exploitation of children.
