
OpenAI, the pioneering artificial intelligence research company behind ChatGPT, has announced a strategic partnership with Oracle and Microsoft to enhance its AI compute capabilities. The collaboration aims to extend the Microsoft Azure AI platform to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), providing additional capacity for OpenAI's rapidly growing generative AI services, which currently support over 100 million users monthly.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to be working with Microsoft and Oracle. OCI will extend Azure's platform and enable OpenAI to continue to scale.” This move underscores OpenAI's need for substantial infrastructure to power its offerings, as Altman has been vocal about securing funding for an AI chip venture.
The partnership highlights Oracle's increasing prominence in the AI landscape, with its Gen2 AI infrastructure attracting high demand. Larry Ellison, Oracle Chairman and CTO, emphasized, “Leaders like OpenAI are choosing OCI because it is the world's fastest and most cost-effective AI infrastructure.” OCI's AI capabilities are already being leveraged by thousands of AI innovators across industries, including Adept, Modal, MosaicML, NVIDIA, Reka, Suno, Together AI, Twelve Labs, and xAI.
OCI's purpose-built AI features enable startups and enterprises to build and train models more efficiently and reliably within Oracle's distributed cloud. For large language models (LLMs), OCI Supercluster can scale up to 64k NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs or GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchips, connected by ultra-low-latency RDMA cluster networking and a choice of HPC storage. These advanced capabilities support a wide range of applications, from Generative AI and computer vision to natural language processing and recommendation systems.
The partnership also sheds light on the evolving dynamics between major tech players in the AI space. While OpenAI has primarily relied on Microsoft for its AI compute needs, with the latter investing $13 billion for a 49% stake in OpenAI's for-profit subsidiary, the Oracle deal highlights the need for additional AI compute capacity to meet growing demand and prevent future ChatGPT outages.
