In January, the company secured nearly $74 million at a valuation of $540 million, up from $121 million in April 2023. In early March, Perplexity concluded a funding round at a $1 billion valuation, with CEO Aravind Srinivas confirming on Twitter that around $63 million was raised.

The startup, founded in 2022, has quickly attracted a lot of investors, including big names like Sequoia and Jeff Bezos. Unlike other AI companies, Perplexity is focusing on improving search technology, raising money frequently to grow their business and keep up with the AI industry's rapid development.

Perplexity provides its AI search tools for both free and paid use, handling 75 million queries and earning $20 million annually. They're raising funds again to take advantage of the current high demand for AI and to support the complex process of developing AI services.

Perplexity, on the other hand, makes money by offering a Pro version for $20 per month that allows users to pick from various large language models, including OpenAI's GPT-4, Anthropic's Claude 3, or the venture's own LLM.

Our value proposition is that the free product is already so good that you can still use it without having to pay for it, but the paid product is going to be insane,” Srinivas told Fortune.
